Stillness

Lately, it feels as if I have been so busy that when I get time to myself, I don’t really know what to do with it…a million and one projects, incomplete tasks, and many other things instantly pop into my brain and then I attempt to choose between them since alone time is usually limited. The “task” I get the most benefit from and try to have/do most often, is to sit in silence with myself.

Initially, when there is silence, my brain tries to fill the space and goes in a gazillion different directions at once. Let me tell you, it’s HARD to live in my brain at times!  It feels like three people simultaneously playing a high speed racquetball game on a miniature court.

When I sit in unplugged stillness, I let my brain wander through things for a bit since this is a good way of determining the specific things I need to let go of, however, after a few minutes, I ask my brain and my heart to be still and open.

I now know the difference between my head and my heart when I observe and listen to both. My brain usually takes me to stressful places, rehashing things I would rather let go of or ruminating on what is to come. My heart, on the other hand, takes me to joy, love, creativity and Silver Linings.

What I know for sure: When you’re so engaged in the business of your life, it’s easy to forget the amazing benefits of silence and stillness in nourishing your soul and reconnecting you with the divine.

Here’s how I find stillness:

  1. Making morning Matcha Tea
  2. Though I’m not a yogi (understatement of the year), doing Child’s Pose takes me to a still place
  3. Counting my breath..usually to 10 works
How and where do you find stillness?

    1. Thanks, Patty. I'm trying…so hard! You are a big inspiration. I remember so fondly being at that conference and schlepping out of bed to (try to!) do yoga with you. 🙂

  1. I find that I can best still my mind, compose my thoughts, meditate, and feel rejuvenated during a walk ALONE outdoors. This can be in my neighborhood, a park, or on a hiking trail; just so I am by myself.
