The Silver Lining of this weekend is the return of Aaron Sorkin’s HBO series, The Newsroom. I am soooooo excited! We all have those special things in life that particularly strike a chord; for me, that happens to be the writing of Aaron Sorkin. He had me at “Hello” on The West Wing and now, The Newsroom.
I love The Newsroom because it is smart, witty and engaging. I adore a show in which I have to pay attention to every single word. The reason that I love the The Newsroom so much is because it is a great balance between fiction and non fiction.
There are critics who have criticized the show for not being realistic. Well, it’s not supposed to be. Aaron Sorkin said in response to some of these negative reviews, “The show is meant to be a fantasy set against very real and oftentimes very serious events.”
The Newsroom reminds me of my other all-time favorite show 24 (also a fantasy set against very real and serious events). We all knew very well that there is no one like Jack Bauer in real life. After all, there is no way one guy could do half the things he did ever, much less in one day. But did his world have some elements of truth to it? And did we want there to be a Jack Bauer out there? Yes, and yes. Do I believe the folks on The Newsroom could be real newsmen and women? And do I want there to be people like them? Absolutely!
This is why it’s such a great balance and will be the Silver Lining of my weekend!
I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do!
