How to Create a Comfortable Home Office Environment

Home Office

To lighten things up a bit after two days of heavy duty posts, I thought I’d write about my love of offices. For as long as I can remember, I have loved everything about offices, from the furniture to the supplies. In fact, when I was a little girl, I loved to go to my father’s office and play (respectfully) at his secretary’s (pre-“executive assistant” title) desk.

Oh and my favorite Pinterest board is “Happy Home Offices.” Combine this with my love of organization you can imagine that when it came time to put together my own office, I had a BLAST! For the record, I know how weird that sounds!

Some of the things that were important to me when creating a comfortable and inspiring place to work (hours on end each day) include:

  1. Personal touches, including photos of family and friends as well as a subtle and fragrant candle.
  2. A bed for Buzz because his favorite place to snooze during the day is under my feet.
  3. Maximizing lighting both both natural as well as lamplight on my desk and in the room.
  4. Organizational supplies and tools, including an efficient (and – I must admit – color-coded) filing system.
  5. Plenty of storage so that the room stays tidy. The cleanliness factor is huge for me. I can’t work in a messy environment.

Below are some images from my workspace.

  1. This is JUST the thing I needed today…I am reorganizing my home office at the start of a new season up north. I'm inspired! You are so right about surrounding ourselves with beauty, light, and everything-in-its-place to get the job done (and done well, and done happily)! Beautiful beautiful photos of your joyous space and you, my light-filled friend.

  2. I'm very impressed. Do you actually keep it this neat? This is something that I always struggle with. Do you have any recommendations of links for more of an office "space" rather than an actual office. I don't have a separate room to use.

    1. Thanks, Victoria! I do try to keep it this neat…and you are inspiring me to do a more specific post on work "space" rather than a full office. I'm on it…

  3. Thanks for sharing these photos of your work area; it gives us a picture of you in your home environment as you write your inspiring blog for all of us. Of course I loved the one of you at your desk and the one with Buzz; big smile on your adorable face.
The cool colors of your coastal locale, and the books everywhere are not a surprise knowing your love of reading. But the coral Royal typewriter is the just the best surprise! Where ever did you get it, or was it refurbished for you? Love it!

    1. Thanks for your sweet note, Carolee. Hee! Hee! Buzz always makes me smile. And the HOTY surprised me with the typewriter for Christmas. Still the HOTY…!

  4. Oooh, pretty! Holly, you and Frances Schultz always inspire me. My life has been a bit chaotic lately and it has started spilling over into my home environment, not good. Your post has given me the impetus to clean up, clear out, move that energy around this weekend! Love, love, love the pictures! Repeating myself, yet again, your blog and Frances' are some of my finest Silver Linings!

    1. Oh how wonderful, E.B.! So happy to hear this news. Please take good care of yourself.
Frances' blog is a Silver Lining for me too!

      1. And EB dare I say YOU are one of our silver linings. I hope your chaos clears soon. It usually does but heaven knows it can wear us out in the process. Spiffing up your personal space and putting things in order seems a superficial remedy, but it always makes you feel better.

  5. To work efficiently its very important that the working environment must be comfortable…otherwise discomfort can reduce the productivity! So make your office a dedicated work area to give yourself a comforting distinction between work and play at home.
