In the past nine months, I have learned to look fear in the face and either go around it, through it or over it.
This combined with the fact that when I feel good, I have much more joie de vivre. When I am able, I am more than willing to not only try new things, but seek new things out.
My opportunity to combine the two came in a very special way recently. When walking along the Bay at Chrissy Fields in San Francisco, my new and fabulous friend suggested that we walk on the Golden Gate Bridge. My stomach is turning even writing that sentence because I am terrified of heights.
However, I was in such a good place physically and emotionally that I didn’t hesitate. Well, truth be told, I may have turned an ashen gray color and stopped breathing for a minute before I said, “Sure!” But, I did say, “Sure!”
It was an exhilarating experience. As much for being on this unique, world renowned structure as for taking my fear of heights head on. While I can’t say that now I’m ready to go hang gliding or skydiving, I will say that I feel awfully darn good about my capacity to try something terrifying that I would never have done before!
Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.
