Question of the Week #2: Spontaneity

Spontaneity

Please allow me to begin by saying a big THANK YOU for participating in a wonderful exchange of ideas last week when I introduced the idea of a “Question of the Week”. What a FUN and inspiring Silver Lining it was to hear from you all!

This week’s question has to do with spontaneity. I’d love to know: What is the last spontaneous thing that you did?  Feel free to share as many details as you’d like.

  1. Hmm. Booked a trip to Europe, with a return journey by the Queen Mary (a transatlantic ship). My husband and I thought, “wouldn’t it be nice . . .” and suddenly we had bought all the tickets!

I love this question & will share it with our FCT community as well. 🙂 Thanks, Hollye!

  2. I will confess that my last spontaneous deluge tiptoed more on the side of one of the 7 Deadly Sins than a mere PMS craving. I woke up one morning at the beginning of December with a ravenous desire for hand made tortilla lobster tacos drench in black bean chile verde sauce. So I got dressed, grabbed my passport and my adorable Tallulah (my dog) and drove 4 hours and 20 minutes, to this shack of a wanna-be restaurant just a few miles north of Rosarito, Mexico, called "La Langosta Saltarina" and had 3 jumbo size lobster tacos, that were prodigiously S.U.B.L.I.M.E!

It took me 7 hours to get back home, the line of entry to the US in the San Ysdro Border was a two hour layover in purgatory and the 5'o clock rush hour traffic from Irvine all the way up to LAX was a first class peekaboo of hell, however I still don't know for sure if my 7 1/2 hour pilgrimage to Mexico to avail my crustacean peccadillo avec warm mexican hand made tortillas and the most scrumptious black bean green chile sauce ever…was more of a Cardinal sin than a spontaneous streak, but what I can say without the least sign of remorse is…it was ever so worth it!

  3. The last spontaneous thing I recall doing was saying yes last Friday to a friend who called me about taking in a movie that very afternoon. She had "cabin fever" as we had had a couple weeks of very cold weather. So I agreed and I also called two others from our movie-going group. One had plans, the other agreed to go. We went to see "Silver Lining Playbook", (which you recommended), and we loved it. Also stopped for drinks, and it was a very enjoyable time with no time spent planning.
I must admit I envied Catherine her spontaneous transatlantic European cruise; how wonderful! Also Isa's adventure to indulge her appetite for the special lobster tortilla tacos smothered in black bean chili verde sauce cracked me up. Ole' !

    1. How fun is that, Carolee? I love it! …and I'm so excited to hear that you loved Silver Linings Playbook. Makes me happy just thinking of it. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Nothing puts you in the mood for Christmas, like the sound of the ringing bell outside WalMart, being watched over by volunteers for the Salvation Army. Knowing how much they do to help people, I usually drop a couple of dollars in and say "Merry Christmas". One evening I was leaving the store with a cart full of goodies, and there was a youth group manning the kettle. They were joking around, and would ring the bell, and some were doing little dance steps, and singing. I reached into my purse and took out a $5.00 bill and waved it at a couple of teen girls, and said, "You can put this in the pot for me, if y'all can group together and be serious so we can sing "O Little Town of Bethlehem". They said, let's do it everyone, so I handed over the bill, and I started off singing the first few words, and voice by voice they all joined in and we sang two verses, much to the delight of the customers coming and going. I think, gathered around that kettle, encouraged so many people to think about just what this hurry and scurry was all about, and they slowed down, and listened, and some joined in. There were some shoppers who went on the way, but many dropped money into the kettle. It was a beautiful and spontanious moment that gave me a warm and blessed feeling. As I walked away, I said, "Singing makes people happy, so y'll just sing when you want and your kettle will be overflowing. Remember always, "Jesus is the Reason for the Season" . As I was backing my car out of the handicapped space, I hollered out, " don't let tonight be silent. then I started singing "Silent Night", and they picked up the tune, and as I drove away with a big smile on my face, I thought to myself, "Lord, I believe I just spread a little love around.".

    1. What an absolutely incredible and inspiring story, Barbara. I can imagine the whole event. Wowsy. Thank you so much for sharing! I really appreciate it!

  5. After being diagnosed, I decided to replace my underwear with "pretty" quality underwear. Cost more than I would usually pay for in my old ways of buying "bulk" packages, but I felt so special wearing my new stuff and dumping my old ratty stuff.

  6. Hmmm. The one that comes to mind was in the fall. I decided at around midnight to take a bike ride around DC to take pictures. The monuments were all lit up and the weather was beautiful and there was no traffic. It was perfect.

  7. Decided to have a (MUCH-NEEDED) makeover in the middle of a very hectic day. Just decided to take some time for me. It was wonderful.

  8. Got rid of some clothes that I never should have or will wear again. Packed up three bags for 3 different charaties to be picked up @ my house. Also packed up some "non essential" coffee mugs etc. that might be appreciated too by someone more than me. Then had a tea party with my grand daughters (who wore their princess dresses & asked where is mine-oops in the bag!!)

    1. That's so awesome, Joan. Doesn't it feel good to clean out…and the Silver Lining is giving to those in need.
The tea party sounds fantastic. What a complete spontaneous treat! Have a wonderful weekend!

  9. Spot on with this write-up, I honestly believe that this amazing site needs much
more attention. I'll probably be back again to read through more, thanks for the advice!
