Brookside Books

This category was inspired by the fact that I am a huge reader…or at least I dream to be. There is nothing more beautiful, soothing or inspirational to me than a wall of books. I’m a little (ok, a lot!) compulsive about mine: they are all alphabetized. In addition (full confession), I collect first edition, signed books. They are my treasures.

I love every kind of book and author from Fancy Nancy to Charlotte Bronte. Her quote (from The Letters of Charlotte Bronte), “But life is a battle: may we all be enabled to fight it well!” seems very fitting right now.

Fiction? Nonfiction? Love. Love. Hospice books? Wonderful (sorry if that throws you for a loop)!

I have a newfound love of reading cookbooks. Perhaps this is because I have a dear friend who is a magnificent chef who inspires me. Plus, I love their beautiful photographs.

Fashion and design books? Ohhhhhh, yeeeeeees!!!!

Historical Fiction is my favorite genre. I adore being engaged and entertained by a book, while gleaming valuable information from it. That is what I call win-win.

My favorite books, however, are the ones referred to me by friends when they say, “You will love this.” This, to me, is the kindest, most thoughtful gesture.

So, I will be sharing my favorite reads throughout this process. While many will be memoirs or even clinical books, there will certainly be some unexpected surprises!

My favorite place to buy books is from independent retailers. I love Tecolote and Chaucer’s in Santa Barbara. When I can’t find what I’m looking for there, I go to www.abebooks.com. This website prides itself on compiling an inventory from independent booksellers from around the world. So cool.

Happy Reading!

  1. just finished " fall of giants" by ken follet. great historical fiction read, all +1000 pages of it. it is right up there with " pillars of the earth".

    enjoy!

    1. Fantastic! Can't wait to read it….though it may have to wait until I am off of lifting restrictions! :–)
      Thanks!

  2. Hollye, I love reading cookbooks, too. May I suggest In the Kitchen with a Good Appetite; it's as much a memoir as a cookbook. It's written by Melissa Clark, who writes A Good Appetite, a column, that appears in the New York Times each Wednesday. She's a wonderful writer and her food is marvelous, but not vegan, I'm afraid:)

On a personal note: we've met a handful of times through Julia R and Suzanne G. I'm sitting in my Mother's hospital room in Washington, DC, while she rests before surgery later today. Like you, she is a strong, resilient woman. I've been reading this blog and marveling at your positive attitude and wishing you the best.

I'm looking forward to cooking a healthy, vegan meal for you next week. in the meantime, take good care and know that you are in everyone's thoughts!

    1. Hi Carol,
Thanks so much for your note and recommendation. All the very best wishes to your mom…and to you!
      Take good care.

  3. Love historical fiction…
    some of my favorites are:
The Historian (I was a bit late reading this one!)
    Elizabeth Kostova
A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick
Sarah"s Key and her newest novel A Secret Kept
    Tatiana de Rosnay
Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum
Knowing you, I bet you've read them all already!!!
    xo

  4. Wishing you the very best. So glad we share a favorite genre in books; recovering from my 5th spinal fusion and enjoying having the time to read.

  5. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is fascinating. I also have FBC and am now obsessed with reading about the Big C and trying to learn and understand more about it. This book was very interesting – her cells probably helped establish my chemo regimen (and yours) so we both may owe her our lives. The other one I recently read was The Emperor of All Maladies, which is basically a historical autobiography of Cancer. Pretty FBombing amazing. I think maybe you'd enjoy.
