Most days Silver Linings just appear and today was no different (a SL in and of itself!). What was different about today, however, is that I really (really!) needed them.
For every wave of nausea, bone pain (moved to my sacrum today, making it difficult to walk), headache, fatigue and memory loss, I received SL’s to offset every side effect.
For some (extraordinary, SL’d) reason, today was the day of remarkable correspondence: emails and comments that energized, brightened, and motivated me. My gratitude is extraordinary.
Another Silver Lining came in the form of an outrageously, laugh-out-loud funny book: Sometimes I Feel Like a Nut: Essays and Observations by Jill Kargman.
Wonder what drew me to that book? Hmmm…
This is a little book with BIG laughs. Using her sharp wit and hilarious humor, Ms. Kargman laughs at the life moments that might make others cry, which is exactly how I am rolling these days. Ms. Kargman site’s Woody Allen’s Magical Math Equation as her mantra: comedy = tragedy + time.
To add to the humor that is her love of the smell of gasoline, her nail polish names, and her fear of mimes, clowns, and other haunting things, Ms. Kargman illustrates her observations with doodles that capture her amusing voice.
I especially like this book for three reasons:
- It begins with a glossary. Any book that begins with a glossary (other than a book on metaphysics) implies that the book will include really cool words. And I love cool words. Vomitorious, for example. Now, when people ask how I am, I shall simply say, “Vomitorious.”
- The F-Bomb is dropped A LOT!
- We share a mutual disdain for Nellie Olsen. As in Nellie Olsen from Little House on the Prairie.
The Husband and I talk all the time about laughing. About the role that humor (often sick, dry and irreverent) plays in our life in general, but especially the last four months. We love to laugh. And we laugh often. I wish the same for you!
We’re all gonna be dead in eighty years or less, and the ones who live the best obviously aren’t the ones with the most money or most successful careers; they’re the ones who laugh the most. Who are the most nutty.
– Jill Kargman
