In the event that you haven’t yet seen it, I’m super excited to introduce you to a fabulous Silver Lining book: If It Makes You Healthy: More than 100 Delicious Recipes Inspired by the Season.
This is a cookbook written by Sheryl Crow after her breast cancer diagnosis led her to gain interest in the nutrition of her food. The book is co-written by Chuck White with Mary Goodbody (how fabulous is THAT name?).
Sheryl’s breast cancer diagnosis “screamed ‘vulnerable'” and prompted her to change her ways, despite already being fit and healthy. I feel the EXACT same way.
The introduction of the book, written by Sheryl Crow, is fabulously motivating. This book is by no means limited to those with FBC. On the contrary, it seems (to me at least) to be written for an audience focused on familial health and well-being. Not much more of a SL in the world than that!
I was elated to see that the foreword to the book is written by Rachel Beller, Registered Dietician and Founder of the Beller Nutritional Institute, LLC. Rachel happens to be my nutritionist and has helped me IMMENSELY. I mean beyond belief. Rachel has tips throughout the book that are fantastic. I’ll do a separate post on Rachel because she is so great!
In the meantime, please allow me to share one of my favorite SL recipes from my favorite new cookbook. It is a HIT in our home! I’m so grateful to Sheryl and Chuck for this book.
Sheryl’s Tuna Salad
Ingredients
- Two 3 3/4-ounce cans organic, dolphin-safe, wild albacore tuna drained (Vital Choice or Wild Planet brands)
- 1/3 cup finely diced tart apples, such as Granny Smith
- 1/4 cup finely diced celery
- 2 tbsp lowfat Vegenaise or low-fat mayonnaise
- 1 1/2 tsp finely chopped flat-leaf parsley
- 1/2 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- In a glas bowl, using a fork, mix together the tuna, apples, celery, Vegenaise or mayonnaise, parsley, and lemon juice.
- Stir just to mix; this should not be mushy. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
- Use the tuna salad right away or cover and refrigerate for up to 48 hours.
Rachel’s Tip
One serving of tuna contains a hefty dose of vitamin D, which promotes optimal breast health and helps regulate calcium. Just shop smart and get low-mercury canned tuna.
When it comes to eating right and exercising, there is no ‘I’ll start tomorrow.’ Tomorrow is disease.

Yummy! My kids LOVE tuna, and it's such a great protein source that is low fat, and I'm always looking for ways to "spice it up". I also love Sheryl Crow (her music, her smile, her attitude) and I love that she transformed her inspiration into such a wonderful healthy project.
Also wanted to tell you that Shawn got me "The Paris Wife" after reading about it on your blog and OMG it is soooooo delicious!!! I didn't get nearly enough sleep last night because I couldn't put it down! Oh, to be living in Paris amongst Pound, Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, Sylvia Beach. To stroll along the Seine at sunset…drink wine in the cafe's and watch the parade of fabulously dressed women…only a fabulous book can transport us to those wonderful worlds of yesteryear we get to live in vicariously. Thanks for sharing a great read.
Hope today you are feeling good and enjoying some yummy tuna salad!!
Hi Hollye,
Pat Dunn again… (Rebecca's Girl Scout leader and practicing Jungian psychotherapist in L.A.- http://www.GoldenKeyResources.com). Haven't written for a while, but read your every, very well written words with enormous pleasure. Know you have a future book here – easy. (I'm trying to write memoir – aieee!.) Not about FBCa.
Eight years out now from a double mastectomy and your same drug and radiation plan, just completed thorough (but still scary) total body check up (nuclear heart stress test, lung/bone x-ray, endo/colonoscopy etc. Today – good news, all great!!! SL. Know you will be the same, because we have so much to do; you and your Finally five, and me with news of a NEW baby ON THE WAY with my younger daughter!!!
If you ever care to correspond, I'm Pedsierra@aol.com. I hike, and can't wait for the snow to melt so I can go on another backpacking trip on the east side of the Sierra (part of what I'm writing about).
XOXO, Pat D.
P.S. This 5 mo. old boy, in the womb, is called, "Little Dude." Pat D.

Wow!! Where can I find a copy? My book store does not have this book. My husband and I love to cook. (We own a gourmet chocolate shop). Hope you have a great day. Thank you for all your inspiration and silver linings, some days they keep me going.
Smile, it makes your face (and body) feel good. Much Love, Joan
Thanks for your note, Joan. If you google it, you will find ordering opportunities. Thank you also for your kind words. They mean so much to me!
