Huffington Post and Rainy Day Musings

The fourth Brookside Buzz article is posted on The Huffington Post!  Here is the link (please feel free to pass along to friends, family or anyone who might be interested!):

Breast Cancer and Surgery:  What a Pain!

Today has been a deliciously cozy, rainy day in Santa Barbara.  These don’t come along very often and I love them when they do.  I find it remarkable that a place can be as beautiful when the rain falls as it is when the sun shines (Silver Lining).

Splash!!

On another note, as a (fairly) new resident of this heavenly community, I am still amazed and perplexed by the amount of energy that goes into the dialogue about the weather…especially when 90% (make that 95%!) of the weather is spectacularly gorgeous.  For example, most all of last week, the weather was flawlessly sunny and exquisitely warm. Yet, after one day of rain, everyone falls apart.  Cracks me up, really.

The day started out with a Silver Lining: I was able to exercise (my first in 12 days!) before the rain started.  Ohhhhh, it felt so good physically, but also emotionally because I was able to catch up with friends.

Our daughter, a/k/a Finally Five, had a super fun play date, which left me with some alone time. One of the things that I do when I can’t focus (on anything intellectually stimulating) is clean.  I love to alphabetize, methodize and organize.

Today, I hit my closet.  I found myself trying on some clothes that I haven’t worn in a while.  A SL to being chemo skinny is that everything is either loose or is really big. (I had to stretch for that SL because no way, no how would I voluntarily make  that trade!)

At one point, when I looked in the mirror, I just laughed. Hard.  My scarf was 1/2 way on, which also means that it was 1/2 way off.  In addition to seeing my chalky white head, I noticed that the wrinkles on my face are particularly deep as is the color of the dark circles under my eyes.  Get the picture?

I don’t think that Coco Chanel would have appreciated my sense of humor, especially since I was wearing one of her vintage jackets; but the good news is that 1) she wasn’t there and 2) I thought that the whole scene was quite hilarious (SL).  Chemo-sobby be damned!

Another joy of the day was viewing a Silver Lining Movie with Finally Five.  We watched Finding Nemo.  I happen to adore the character Dory. How can you not love that smile?

Dory

One of the things that I like so much about her is her SL attitude. (I can also empathize with her inability to remember things!) Throughout the movie, she says:

When life gets you down, you know whatchya gotta do? Just keep swimming , just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming!

So as I was standing in the closet, I thought to myself:  Just keep laughing, just keep laughing, just keep laughing, laughing, laughing! And laugh was exactly what I did! Thanks, Dory, for helping me find a SL today.

Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain.

  2. One of the many things you have brought with you throughout this whole process is your sense of humor. No matter what, you always have your witty, sarcastic sense of humor that I can't get enough of! xo
