Silver Lining Book: The Flâneur

A dear friend suggested the most beautiful image to incorporate into my post-chemotherapy slow-down (which was especially thoughtful knowing that slowing down usually isn’t in my repertoire!).

Knowing how much I love Paris, she suggested that as I take my daily strolls, I envision being a Parisian flâneur and gave me the following book:

The Flâneur by Edmund White

Flâneurs, she said, “are of of the most romantic sorts of people who used to walk with turtles on a leash to slow them down to appreciate the journey.”

A little research reveals that a flâneur moves about Paris without apparent purpose but is secretly attuned to the history of the place and in covert search of adventure.

How divine!  I’m there…strolling…now….ahhhhhh.

Charles Baudelaire describes a flâneur as that of “a person who walks the city in order to experience it”.  Isn’t that beautiful?

Now, how is this for a SL (silver lining): The Husband looked up from his morning iPad reading and  (without knowing what I was writing) suggested that we spend New Year’s Eve 2011 in Paris!
